GET TO KNOW UTHENGA MUSIC: THE FUTURE OF MALAWI'S URBAN GOSPEL MUSIC

Psalm 147:7 "Sing out your thanks to the Lord, sing praises to our God with a harp." Through music, Blantyre based record label “Uthenga music” is spreading out the gospel to world.

Led by an entrepreneur and Malawi College of Acountancy student; Prince B. Mbaika better known  by his stage name self-starter, the label has four artists from different colleges namely; Micheal Phiri (Mycall) from Polytechnic, Emmanuel Chipala (Manzy Dare) from NRC, Alfred Malani (Vigorous) from PACT and the founder himself, Self-starter from MCA.

Martin Luther once said “Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” Unlike other labels, Uthenga music aims not only at spreading the word of God but also taking part in charity works.

“Uthenga is strongly committed to both work with and reach less privileged people in many aspect ways either with spiritual, psychological or helping them with different resources where possible.” Explained Self-starter.

  

As a record label, Uthenga muzic has managed to give birth to cloth brands which are currently making strides in Malawi’s fashion world. These are Uthengawear & I RUN AFRICA (IRA).

Despite all these achievements, Uthenga Muzic face different kind of challenges and the paramount one being financial struggle.  Since they don't have sponsors hence independent team, they use their personal money to support their projects which is not a piece of cake for college students like themselves.

“Apart from finance, it is also a bit struggle to get our music done. Projects take long to be accomplished or at times we even fail to finish them due to the underration that we get when working with big names in the music industry the reason being that we are not yet well established. Being college students is also a burden. Everybody is mostly busy with academics hence to meet and discuss issues concerning Uthenga is not easy” confessed Self-starter.
