We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unfamiliar styles to explore. Some of these include; Rock, Electronic, Hip-hop/Rap, Country, Funk, Reggae, Latin, Blues, Polka and of course our very own Afro-Beats.As overwhelming as it sounds, it can be so very exhausting to digest hundreds of these genres and be fond of. But if you're a music enthusiast, here are quick tips to widen your music horizon in this one global village.
🎵 Make listening habitual
🎵 Cultivate your music taste through these 3 different modes of listening; Formal (Concerts or Shows), Focused (Solitary) and Casual (As an accompaniment to other activities)
🎵 Keep listening to the music you love, but be willing revisit long held beliefs, particularly if you describe your musical taste negatively towards a certain genre (such as "I hate Jazz") it is likely these attitudes will stifle your joy.
🎵 Consider recommendations from friends. There is a good chance you will listen to music suggested by someone you like or admire.
🎵 Know the story behind the song, artist or genre to easily relate.
🎵 Be curious, patient and persistent. Never pre-assume that because you do not immediately like an unfamiliar piece that it is not worth listening to. The more you listen, the better your brain will be at triggering a pleasure response.
🎵 Lastly, Chill. Do not feel you have to keep up with new music trends. We already have a thousand of years of music to explore.
